MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Agnes Scott College opened USA South volleyball play with a split in their first weekend of conference play on the campus of Huntingdon College. The Scotties opened their four-match weekend with a 3-1 win over North Carolina Wesleyan, before being handled, 3-0, by Meredith College.

In the opening match against N.C. Wesleyan, the Scotties used a balanced offensive attack to keep the Battling Bishops (3-10, 1-1 USA South) guessing on defense. Paige Heck and Bonnie Derks each had a dozen kills, and Resa Knott contributed 11 out of the middle for the Scotties (6-4, 1-1 USA South). Defensively, Haley Payne continued her strong first-year campaign, as she logged 34 digs. Heck and Derks both had double-doubles as they contributed 10 and 14 digs, respectively. Setter Anna Tomkins also hit double digits in two different categories, leading the team with 24 assists and also digging 11 attacks. Bella Kammerer had 17 assists for the Scotties.

In the second match, the Avenging Angels (9-2 1-0 USA South) showed why they are one of the teams to beat this season in the conference, using a strong blocking effort to slow the attack of the Scotties. The Angels outhit the Scotties, .434 to .025, while blocking the Scotties 10 times in the match.

The Scotties continue their road swing today as they take on Mary Baldwin and Ferrum.
